Join us to see an entertaining Shakespeare film, on our large screen digital projector system. There will be treats, and casual discussion after for anyone interested.

APRIL 26. 7 pm – Happy Birthday, Will Shakespeare! 449 years old, and still speaking.

Enjoy one of the world’s Great Comedies, hilarious, with a bitter-sweet tang.

We present for you – A tale of Shipwrecks, Identical Twins, Gender-Bending, Mistaken Passions, a Wise Fool, a Sour Puritan who gets his Comeuppance. All set in the mythic Duchy of Illyria.

Viola is cast ashore in Illyria. She disguises herself as a boy and becomes page to Duke Orsino. Her disguise does not prevent her from falling in love with the dashing Duke. Not realizing this, the Duke sends his new page “boy” to present his love suite to Olivia, who has refused him previously. Olivia still isn’t interested in the Duke’s attentions, but she does fall in love with this “boy” sent to court her. Uh-oh…

Meanwhile Olivia’s officious sourpuss butler, Malvolio (the original killjoy), has a clever (and cruel) practical joke played on him by Olivia’s drunken uncle, Sir Toby Belch and his boozing buddies. What follows is one of the most famous and funniest sequences in literature. Malvolio deserves some ridicule, but do they take the joke too far?

And don’t forget the sly jester Feste who knows more than he’s telling, but still makes wisecracks that will get him in trouble. He sees everything that’s going on in crazy Illyria. And he can sing a very memorable tune too.

It’s crazy and fun already, but then Viola’s Identical Twin Brother shows up (hey, it’s a comedy). Nobody knows who’s-who, or where their love is correctly bestowed. There’s non-stop confusion and humor, until of course everything works out in the end. (Almost everything, anyway.)

It’s a warm, wise, and superbly performed story. With charming music, hilarious humor, and a little food for thought too.

Featuring wonderful performances by – Ben Kingsley, Helena Bonham-Carter, Imogen Stubbs, Richard E, Grant, Imelda Staunton. Directed by acclaimed director Trevor Nunn.

APRIL 12 – Shakespeare’s most famous Tyrant! Deformed in both body and spirit.

Ian McKellan stars in this riveting screen version of the play, set in a vivid 1930′s era Britain. A civil war has ended and the York family has seized the throne. All seems well, and the new King Edward is in control… Yet some are not content.

Conditions are ripe for the murderous scheming of the new king’s youngest brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester. Richard will stop at nothing in his quest for ultimate power. Friends, family, supposed loyalties are only bloody stepping stones for his own ambition.

This is a chilling study in the single-minded pursuit of power. Sadly, it still rings very true even today.

The film also features – Annette Benning, Robert Downey Jr., Kristin Scott-Thomas, and Maggie Smith.

It’s cataloging day for me at the library. We have some great new fiction titles. In a few days they will be ready for the shelves; you will be able to check out one of these!

Barnstorm : Contemporary Wisconsin Fiction – A collection of short stories about Wisconsin by Wisconsin writers.

The Baileys Harbor Bird and Booyah Club - This story is centered in Door County and is by another Wisconsin author. I love the cover!

Park Falls Public Library was the subject of a recent letter to the editor in the Park Falls Herald and Phillips Bee. The letter was submitted by John Smart, President of the Friends of the Park Falls Public Library.

Mardi Gras Book Sale

The Park Falls Public Library’s annual Mardi Gras Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will take place on Saturday, February 16 from 10 am to 2 pm in the library’s auditorium. Take advantage of great bargains on gently used books, paperbacks, best sellers, A-V items for all ages as well as a few surprises. The library is handicap accessible. Come and join in the Mardi Gras fun at the library!

Academy Awards Movie Nights

You are invited to celebrate the upcoming Academy Awards at two pre-Oscar night viewing parties to be held at the Park Falls Public Library. The library will host a screening of a 2012 best picture nominee on Friday, February 8 at 7:00 and then in two weeks, a screening of a 2013 best picture nominee on Friday, February 22 at 7:00. The films will be shown movie theater style on the large back wall of the stage in the auditorium. Licensing rules restrict us from giving the actual titles of the films but enjoy the hints below and of course to find out the actual titles more quickly, call the library (762-3121). Refreshments will be provided.

Friends of the Library Meeting

Friends of the Park Falls Public Library will meet on Thursday, January 31 at 10:30 AM in the Library Board Room.
This is a regular scheduled meeting. The public is very welcome to attend.
If you are a supported of the Library, the Friends are a good group to join. They raise funds, support programs, make supplemental purchases for the library, and are a fun way to have public participation in the on-going efforts of the Park Falls Public Library. It’s informal and fun.

Harmonious Wail at Park Falls Public Library

Jazz group, Harmonious Wail will perform at Park Falls Public Library Friday, January 11 at 7pm.

Smoldering vocals laced among the jazzy mandolin and guitar; an infectious blend of continental jazz, swing, gypsy music and melodic vocals …how DOES one describe the sound of Harmonious Wail? Winners of multiple MAMA awards ranging from Best Jazz CD, Best Ensemble Vocalists of the Year, Favorite Jazz Band, Best World Artist and Best World Song, to Best Instrumentalist, HARMONIOUS WAIL has caught numerous listeners by total surprise during its more than 20-year history.

Drawing from the rich influence of the European gypsy musicians, most notably Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli (creators of the gypsy swing genre), the Wail bursts through the normal boundaries of that genre with it’s intoxicating vocals as displayed by Maggie Delaney-Potthoff. The enticing arrangements and sheer joy the Wail brings to every performance is downright addictive!

This is a concert you won’t want to miss!

Welcome to Alyssa Cleland.
Alyssa is the new Children and Youth Services Librarian at Park Falls Public Library.
Please stop in and introduce yourself to our newest staff member. Alyssa is eager to get to know our community better, and particularly she wants to meet her younger customers, and let them get comfortable with her as a new person in their lives.
A native of Northern Wisconsin, Alyssa had been working in the southern part of the state. She is happy to be back in the big woods, and eager to work with our younger users as we help them learn and grow.
